We had a little excitement today. An axle caught on fire and we were hauling a hazmat load full of flammables and corrosives. Sometimes the bearings in the wheels of these big, heavy trucks , go bad and lock up and fly apart inside the axle hub. When that happens, it creates so much heat that the grease catches on fire. It can then catch the tire on fire and that catches the trailer on fire. Nationwide (the trucking company) has had 2 trailers burn up this way during the past year. Fortunately, Tracy saw the axle smoking and got the truck stopped and the fire extinguisher out. By then Eddie was up and we got the fire put out before it got to the trailer. The bosses at Nationwide told us we did a great job. Too bad they don't give a bonus for saving their $50,000 trailer and load.
